The Tonga Sports Association and National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) proudly announces that eight Tongan athletes have been awarded International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Solidarity Scholarships as they begin their qualification campaign for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Olympic Solidarity Scholarship programme is an initiative of the IOC designed to support elite athletes from around the world in their preparation and qualification for the Olympic Games.

The scholarships provide financial assistance over the LA28 qualification period, covering training, coaching, international competition exposure, sports science services, medical support, and living expenses.

The programme helps ensure that athletes from all National Olympic Committees — regardless of size or resources— have equal opportunities to compete on the world stage.

TASANOC congratulates the following scholarship recipients:

  1. Penisimani Ta’e’iloa – Athletics
  2. Titali Kolomalu – Athletics
  3. Alexis Vakasiuola – Golf
  4. Pauline Lolohea – Taekwondo
  5. Angel Sitapa – Taekwondo
  6. Vaoahi Afu – Swimming
  7. Jazz Teuhema – Swimming
  8. Uaealesi Funaki – Weightlifting

TASANOC Secretary General Netina Latu Vea welcomed the announcement, highlighting its significance for Tonga’s sporting future.

“The Olympic Solidarity Scholarship is a vital investment in our athletes and in the future of sport in Tonga. It provides the structured support they need to train consistently at a high level as they pursue qualifications for LA28.

"TASANOC is proud of these athletes and the dedication they have shown to earn this opportunity. We stand firmly behind them as they carry our nation’s hopes onto the world stage.”

TASANOC will share the journeys of these athletes over the coming months — their preparation, sacrifices, milestones, and the resilience required to prepare for competition at the highest level.
